Overview

Medeco, part of ASSA ABLOY, introduced the fourth-generation Medeco 4 system—commonly called M4—in January 2021. It represents their most advanced mechanical lock platform to date, offering enhanced physical security, key control, and master-key flexibility.

Based on decades of engineering innovation, M4 combines angled cuts, rotating and sidebar-enabled pins, and introduces a novel movable element in the key blade to guard against unauthorized duplication and emerging 3D-printing threats.

Technology Highlights

Key & Cylinder Design

• 10-pin system: six primary pins plus four side/finger pins (including a shuttle/lift pin). The key has six angled fore-and-aft cuts and four sidecuts.
  

• Sidebar mechanism: the sidebar retracts only when both primary and secondary pins (interacting with the movable element) are aligned and rotated correctly.
  

• Movable/shuttle pin: a factory-installed 303 stainless steel element embedded in the key interacts with the cylinder’s lift pin to block copying—including via 3D printing.
  

Backwards Compatibility

M4 uses the same pin sets and master-keying software as earlier Medeco generations (Biaxial, M3), meaning existing key machines can handle M4 with a quick-change jaw; no major retooling is required.

Master-Keying Power

With ten total pin positions, a two-level system can support up to 9 million theoretical key combinations—vastly outperforming previous Medeco platforms (Biaxial ~1 million; M3 ~6 million).
